Website Updates

11/23/11

Wow, it has been a while since the last time I posted anything on the main page. I have been using the photos, vehicles, and blog pages as is for a while now so I didn't have any website updates to post. Well, now I do have news. The hard drive for the web server died. Well, more accurately, the virtual drive used by the web server virutal machine had numerous missing sectors after the computer lost power unexpectedly. The operating system partition could not be saved. Luckily I keep all the website and FTP data on separate virtual drives so no data was lost.

This forced me to build up the server again. It had been a couple years since I did that last so it was time. The site is now running under a CentOS 6 server. The Ubuntu host machine was still running 10.04 so I sequentially updated it to 10.10, 11.04, and finally 11.10. Now everything is up to date and running well.

Well, everything except the email server. I decided not to run an email server any longer. Verizon had long ago blocked email relay through their servers meaning I could receive knez.org emails but not send. I decided to drop the knez.org email alltogether. I really only used it for junkmail anyways. It was fun being able to make up new knez.org email addresses when signing up for offers or websites just to see who was selling my address. That by itself is not enough to warrant running the server any longer though. FTP and the website (obviously) are fully functional.

We will soon be posting some wedding photos which means we will probably have plenty of people looking at our photo pages. I thought it was time to update the photo page to make it easier to navigate. Now anytime you click on a photo, you get a preview of it with easy one click access to the next and previous photos as well as the original image. This should make browsing our photos much faster. It still uses only raw html and no javascript or flash which means it will work fine on nearly all mobile devices.

Cloud drive backup to the rescue

Recently the power went off in my house. When it came back on, all my computers happily started up again except my webserver. It is a VM. The host OS started just fine but there was a problem with my virtual machine hard drive the housed all my website content. I had a snapshot but it was 8 months old.

I went ahead and restored to the snapshot and took an inventory of what I was mising, which turned out to be alot. Thankfully I have a automated backup solution, Jungledisk, and it had ...

My webserver is a linux based virtual machine running under VirtualBox. When I first created it, I still had a Windows based webserver running on actual hardware. So when I created the CentOS VM, I created it with a tiny hard drive because I was just playing around. Then my Windows based webserver died. I quickly put my CentOS VM into service as the actual webserver.

The problem was that it still had a tiny hard drive, 8 gb to be precise. I created separate virtual disks for webroot a...
